What in the Eight Divines Are People Talking About?
This article contains the commonly referenced words and phrases as they related to Elder Scrolls Online (ESO) and Massively Multi-player Online (MMO) gaming. It is a reference for anyone not familiar with terms used during conversations: in-game chat and via GameVox.
ADDs/Trash
“Additional Mobs” or “Additional Enemies” are spawned enemies that appear during a fight. They typically appear in waves and must be defeated so they do not kill the group while it attempting to fight a Boss. These mobs frequently add to the defense or healing a boss as well.
Buff
Any positive status effect typically in the form of bonuses to gameplay – increasing attributes or removing harmful effects.
Damage
A PC role that reflects a dedication to damaging mobs and solo targets while grouped. They focus on rotations to buff themselves using active and passive abilities as well as food and potions to achieve large DPS. This is the default role of anyone that is not a healer or tank.
Healer
A PC role that reflects a dedication to healing a group. They focus on the proper ways to use buff and healing abilities, passives and restoration staves.
Leech
To gain advantage, or benefit, from another player’s efforts without offering anything in return. Example: Waiting for a player to aggro NPCs to walk in and grab a chest they were going to. The origin comes from the animal “leech” which steals blood, sometimes unnoticeably.
Pull
Simply put this is an action to Aggro on purpose. You aggravate NPCs by using skills and attacks to cause them to come after you. An entire mob cannot be pulled to one Player – the majority will follow the Player and a few will go after other group members.
Taunt
A specific ability that performs a Pull on a NPC such that that NPC is focused solely on the taunter. Tanks use taunt abilities on bosses to keep them occupied so they don’t affect the rest of the group while fighting ADDs.
Aggro
Shorthand for “Agravate”. The act of trigging a response reaction from enemy NPCs. Aggro is performed by getting too close to them while not invisible. Mobs and Bosses that are agravated will always target the highest threat to them (unless acted about to counter that such as a Taunt).
Bugged
Sometimes a quest will advance to a certain point where it can no longer continue due to a game fault (quest markers don’t appear, something can’t be activated or a Boss won’t appear). At this moment the quest is “bugged”. The most notable bug occurs in the Nobles District where one of the pre-requisite doors stays 85% damaged and no one can complete the quest in order to start on daily quests.
DOT
Pronounced “dot”, this term is “Damage Over Time” and refers to abilities that deal some damage over a certain amount of seconds. DOTs typically inflict the worst wounds since their effects are not noticed right away. This especially includes disease and poisons.
Magic {Class}
Magicka-based refers to PCs that focus the majority of their abilities on usage of Magicka.
Nerf
The making of any ability or skill less effective – typically in power, duration or buff. The origin comes from Ultima Online referring to the Nerf toy brand – items that are not likely to be injurious.
Spongy/Squishy
This term defines a PC as “lacking firmness or solidity” or “soft and yielding to the touch”. They cannot absorb damage well and therefore are easily killed. Typically this term is used in PvP indicating they don’t take long to kill. It is also useful to target the squishy players first in a Zerg.
Toon/Alt
A specific (or Alternate) character that a player owns on their account.
Ulti
Shorthand for “Ultimate” referring to the Ultimate ability one has slotted.
Boss
The hardest single targets in a Delve, Dungeon or Zone. There may be more than one Boss but typically only the final NPC is referred to as the Boss. There are also six overland Bosses in each zone that are typically easier to kill. A few bosses (such as in DLC zones) are difficult unless you are in Zerg.
CC
“Crowd Control” is a broad term encompassing all of the disabling effects in ESO. It is so called because it can be used to control groups of enemies in order to survive. There are two types of CC: soft and hard.
* Soft CC includes all of the controlling effects which don’t inhibit the targets function of using abilities. Examples: Snare, Immobilze, Root, Silence
* Hard CC includes all of the controlling/disabling effects which remove all functionality from a target. Examples: Stun, Knock Back, Knock Down, Off-Balance, Disorient, Fear, Pull”
HOT
Pronounced “hot”, this term is “Healing Over Time” and refers to abilities that heal over a certain amount of seconds. HOTs are not noticed right away as huge health bonuses but rather they offer sustainability while taking damage.
O.P.
“Over Powered” refers to something that is (or at least appears to be) vastly over powered compared to similar options.
Stam {Class}
Stamina-based refers to PCs that focus the majority of their abilities on usage of Stamina.
Zerg
A term with it’s origin in the game StarCraft. It refers to an (overwhelmingly) large group of players (sometimes as much as 3 full raid groups – 72 people) who are all cooperating on a common task. This is generally used to describe groups of players performing raids in Cyrodiil or taking Imperial City District flags. Friendly Zergs are found running world boss quests as well.
Broken
The effect of an item, set bonus or skill is deemed “broken” when it is overpowered or unbalanced. Broken items typically exist for the duration of a patch (a few weeks) until the game authors nerf it.
Crit
“Critical Strike” or “Critical Hit” is an attack or ability that achieves a larger than normal effect: performing 50% more damage. The chance of a Crit is dependent on several factors but can be identified on the character statistic screen as Weapon Critical and Spell Critical.
Debuff
Any negative status effect typically in the form of negates to gameplay – decreasing attributes or prevention of taking actions.
DPS
“Damage Per Second” is the most common in-game measurement of the amount of damage a PC can deal. The higher this number, the more successful a PC will be in Dungeons, against Bosses and enemy Players.
Mini-boss
These are Bosses that are easier to kill yet still require a good effort to bring down efficiently. They are preludes to a final Boss.
Proc
Some claim it’s shorthand for “Programmed Random OCcurence”. It represents something happening or processing as a triggered event. When something triggers, or “procs”, something in-game occurs – typically buffs and debuffs, direct damage or attribute manipulation.
Tank
A PC role that reflects a dedication to keeping enemies trained on them. They focus on the proper ways to use buffs, passive abilities and bolster themselves with great resistence to endure massive damage without dying. The role works to distract enemies so that the their attacks aren’t hitting the DPS and Healer players, which are working to eliminate enemies.
Short-holed
When you go to a fishing hole and only get to catch 1-3 fish before the hole disappears and you’re left with only a frown and a Wet Gunny Sack.
Arrius
The second closest (due to terrain) Ebonheart Pact Keep to the Pact Imperial Sewer entrance.
Chalman
The closest Ebonheart Pact Keep to the Pact Imperial Sewer entrance.
PUG / Friendly
This useful term is given to quickly refer to a friendly (of the same faction) Player that is UnGrouped. The term is used for both good (acknowledging a same-faction Player in Cyrodiil) and unfortunate (seeing a Player Aggro a Boss or Dolmen your group is trying to achieve) circumstances.
Banana
A member of the Aldmeri Dominion alliance is represented by a yellow banner.
Cherry / Raspberry
A member of the Ebonheart Pact alliance is represented by a red banner.
Sewers
This term refers to the Imperial City District Sewer system that offers Mobs, Bosses, Portals and enemy players. The sewers offer Sky Shards and earning of Alliance Points (AP), Tel Var Stones (TV) and character experience (XP).
Blueberry
A member of the Daggerfall Covenant alliance is represented by a blue banner.
Districts
This term refers to the Imperial City Districts that each offer a daily quest, Mobs, Bosses, Portals and of course enemy faction players. In order to begin doing daily quests, a Toon must first accomplish the pre-requisite quests offered at each District. The districts offer Sky Shards and earning of Alliance Points (AP), Tel Var Stones (TV) and character experience (XP).
B.R.K.
“Blue Road Keep” is the third closest Ebonheart Pact Keep to the Pact Imperial Sewer entrance.
The Golden
Each faction has a special vendor that appears on weekends to sell monster masks, monster shoulders and gold jewelry. The South Morrowind Gate is the zone that the Ebonheart Pact Golden appears in. The items on sale seem to rotate between Head & Shoulder from weekend to weekend. The gold jewelry is always of a random set.
