My First Day in Cyrodiil as a Beginner.

If I fall

No shame in Stumbling.

A friend said that I would die very quickly in Cyrodiil if I didn’t know what I was doing and he suggested I do the “Welcome to Cyrodiil’ quest”. I didn’t do it properly and he was right. Later I discovered that there was no shame in stumbling and it was normal on your first attempt to suffer at the hands of the more experienced enemy players.

Listen

You learn more.

I decided that I should listen to someone with experience.  Anyway, after I had finally figured out how to get to Cyrodiil, I was faced with a huge and mysterious landscape. It was wonderful how the creators had taken the old Oblivion Story and reverse engineered it by two thousand years. I was instantly immersed into a game that I played a long time ago. The years of suggestions from the Modding community had been listened to and acted upon.

Dangerous

I was excited.

I was excited about what lay ahead.  I was told that it was as dangerous as it was beautiful and so I decided to carefully explore on my own. Big mistake! No sooner had I started looking around when I stumbled on  a group of enemy players who chased me and killed me within seconds. Well, back to base I went, thinking that it was over very quickly.

This time I was met by some guy who suggested that I do some training. I don’t know how I missed this NPC the first time, I think I may have ignored him in my excitement to be in Cyrodiil. I did the training and quickly learned how to aim and fire off the various pieces of equipment. There were also stables, merchants and banks at the two bases in Cyrodiil. That was pretty cool, I felt a little more confident for a beginner. I got some more tips from my friend. He said to take plenty of soul gems for reviving other players in the field, keep a good supply of food and a whole range of poisons and tonics. He also told me to learn how to use the quick slot devise. The first ability to gain from my Alliance tool bar should be the rapid manoeuvres for your mount. Until you get this first ability you can piggy back off other players when quickly moving from one place to another.

Take Supplies

I thought that now it was getting complicated being in Cyrodiil but honestly, it didn’t take long to figure this out and most other players were helpful. Well, most of them, I did come across some jerks, but that happens where ever you go in life. “It’s just a game.” I told myself, “If it stops being fun you can always stop playing. If someone is cranky then that is their issue, not yours.” Actually by the end of the day I had met a great bunch of people with really funny senses of humour, but that’s a story for another time.

The Magic of Teleport

It took a little effort to figure out how the teleport system worked and the significance of the lines connecting castles. I loved the use of tents that were erected by the richer players and how they could be hidden in some secret place so that you didn’t have to travel all the way back to your Castle or Keep if the enemy got you or your line was cut off from the safety of the fort. Woo, listen to me, I already sound like I know what I’m talking about.

Game Vox Chat

My friend also suggested that I go to my chat screen and under ZONE type in, LFG. I learned later that this meant, “Looking For Group.” Wow, instantly this guy called “King something” invited me to his group. At last, I was with friends and getting somewhere. Now King, what ever his name was, asked me if I was a Tank or Healer. I typed back in Chat that I had no Idea. He asked if I was a newbie. I reluctantly said that I was, thinking that I would probably get dropped from his group.

“That’s OK.” He replied, “Everyone has to start somewhere.”  He explained that few people wanted to be a tank or a full time healer but he was working on this new tactic that used tanks and healers. He said his  main group was made up of  six smaller groups, each with four players and he was trying to have six tanks and six healers, one of each in the group. My build was a general purpose PVE player, (Player Verses Environment). He told me that I would probably have to make some adjustments later for PVP, (Player Verses Player), but what I had was fine to start with.

Tactics Require Discipline

I was curious, but not sure where all this was going. He explained that his tactic required everyone to obey orders and above all stick together and never ever break from the group or go chasing someone by yourself. I had already tried to do my own thing and the results were disastrous, so his requirement was easy for me. He explained that PVP guys tended to want to do their own thing and that was a weakness that could be exploited by the enemy.

They Were Tough

It didn’t take much to get me to agree to stick with the group.  After about a half an hour of more talk I was assigned to a group of girls, or at least I think they were girls. They were pretty tough whatever they were. We were to be a skirmishing party.

The Plan Went Like This

The plan went something like this.  The scouting party would find the enemy, then voice chat their position to King Thinga me jig and then they would hide and wait. The rest of us would stealthily join them and wait in the bushes and trees for the main party of raiders to come forward. When all six groups were assembled, we had twenty four players all hiding in the bushes.

Tactics Require Discapline

I thought we were going to all attack together, but instead we split again in twelve and went in different directions. My group attacked a farm, and I learned about taking the flag and waiting for it to change colour. I heard on voice chat that the other group took a mill, and then we all met at a mine and took that with ease. Our enemy was disorganized and confused. They came out from the castle but were easily driven back even when a bunch of them ganged up on us.

We Were Too Strong

“ We are too strong for them. This was easy!”  I thought, but really, this was my first day, so what did I really know? I didn’t have time to watch the siege of the Castle, which they tell me was a beautiful thing. The scouting party took off somewhere and we skirmishers had the job of coming to their aid if they found enemy outside the castle. The plan was that the scouts would hide until we skirmishers joined them and we would ambush the enemy together.

I Remember Looking Back

The voice chat was alive with reports. I remember looking back down the hill at a row of Ballista’s with glowing shields over them. They were pounding away at a wall. Suddenly the enemy was coming from a nearby Keep to defend the castle. They came all strung out and scattered with no plan but just to attack us the moment they arrived. Our guys stuck close together. The healers were magnificent, the tanks were tenacious and our damage guys put up a great fight. Suddenly our  skirmishers were ordered to come out of hiding and join in. The three girls in my group were amazing. Not once did any of us look like we were in trouble. We would single out each enemy player and down them in no time flat.

The enemy would sometimes gang up on us, but the tank took the beating while we retaliated. It was awesome! One of the enemy had this ability to devastate a group all at once  and I could see how we were vulnerable to that kind of attack, but the next time the tank kept him busy while we ripped into him. He was tough and kept taking potions or something because each time the four of us nearly killed him he would bounce back.  Suddenly we were joined by the scouts. He could not stand and went down in a  bright flash of colours and explosions.

My heart was in my throat, pounding with excitement as wave after disorganized wave hit us from behind, but they were repelled and the  castle wall in front collapsed. We were in. The scouts and the skirmishers manned the breach in the wall as our guys took the castle. I looked at the clock and realised I had been playing for two hours.   I’ve got to say that the experience of my first day was, awesome. That night I went to sleep with the sound of victory ringing in my ears. Oh, and I finally remembered his name, it was King of the Trouts. I have never seen the King of the trouts again or the girls in my skirmisher group. I have since then learned how to use the friend device on my tool bar. It is a pity I didn’t know then though. If you meet the King,  say Hi,for me.
